I’ll Take ‘Divorce’ For $50,000…

Tony Parker with Eva Longoria Parker

What is this, Divorce Week?

First it was Beyoncé Knowles’ parents’ stalled divorce rumors after Mathew Knowles’ alleged paternity suit with a younger woman. Now THIS…Eva Longoria is divorcing NBA star Tony Parker! After a lukewarm 3.5 years of marriage, the couple is calling it quits. Eva filed the court documents Wednesday, citing “irreconcilable differences” (aka “committing adultery”). Sources pointed to the San Antonio Spurs player’s involvement with a teammate’s wife, to which Parker replied: “that’s my private life” (once again, aka “infidelity”). In essence, The Desperate Housewives star will have her maiden name restored, and will also seek spousal support from Parker, although a prenuptial agreement was signed.

Recent surveys have shown that 4 in 10 people rule marriage obsolete. So is marriage an object now more so than a commitment? Is it like some trendy, shiny device that’s fun to have around, but useless when it’s malfunctioning? Or, is marriage a status symbol, a facade used only to make us seem more “normal” than the next person? It’s funny to see how the seriousness of marriage and commitment has dwindled throughout the decades. We look at our grandparents and great-grandparents and marvel at their tenacity and resilience through difficult times in marriage, but can’t mimic that same example when it comes to our own relationships.
