Are Our Schools Safe Anymore?

Are our schools safe anymore? Four students have been shot and one killed at an Ohio high school, according to CNN. This is terrible!  The gunman reportedly, opened fire in the school cafeteria of this suburban-Cleveland high school. This occurred at the beginning of the day. “The individual, reportedly a student at the school, is in custody”, an FBI agent told reporters.  The students are injured, but the extent of their wounds has not been disclosed. FBI agent Scott Wilson said he just “hopes they are okay.” CBS This Morning correspondent, John Miller, reports that at least one of the students was critically injured.

The shooting happened around 7:30 a.m. at the 1,100-student school, according to CBS News. Television showed parents hurrying to the school to escort children away from the building, and ambulances could be seen arriving at the high school to transport the injured students.  The students, who were shot, according to one student, were from a nearby high school and were waiting for a bus to take them to their school as they waited in the cafeteria.

It was reported that this shooting was from an individual being bullied by the children he injured. This is an epidemic occurring in our schools today.  The questions is what can be done to prevent further incidents of bullying and subsequent injuries and deaths?

Bullying is prevalent in many schools, whether it is elementary school or a college institution. It could range anywhere from being harassed for lunch money, to being socially neglected from a group of students going a college party. On ANY level, bullying is unacceptable, yet unavoidable. Even worse, bullying is an ongoing problem which escalates into adulthood if it’s not promptly resolved. As we head back to school in 2010, here are a few tips for parents to consider:

  • Pay attention to your child’s behavior when dropping them off and picking them up from school.
  • Always monitor the academic progress of your child; a drop in grades could mean that your child is being bullied.
  • Look for any frequent physical scars (i.e. cuts, bruises, scrapes, etc.).
  • If your child becomes easily frustrated, distressed, or socially withdrawn from normal social activities (i.e. sudden disinterest in playing with friends.)

I would like to know what my readers think about this incident. Do you think this child should be in prison for the rest of his life, if this is a result of bullying? Comment below.
