AskDrO wants to know, “Do You Have ADHD?”

Image courtesy of: http://media.mercola.com/imagesAttention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common disorders in the known world. Millions of adults and children suffer from this condition, showing various symptoms such as trouble concentrating, daydreaming and moving slowly, missing details in school work or career assignments, and/or difficulty processing information as accurately as others.

Many factors  can determine the result of a person’s ADHD chances:

  • Genetics – the results may lie in the genes, or “blueprints” of our beings. If the condition runs in the family, we will most likely have the condition as well.
  • Environment – some studies suggest that certain environmental factors determine the result of ADHD. For example, children who have been exposed to high levels of  lead in their school may be at greater risk for this disorder.
  • Sugar/Food Additives – although weak research has been performed, some scientists speculate the link between certain food additives (i.e. artificial colors, etc.) to the increase of brain activity.

How do you know if you have ADHD? First thing’s first: NEVER perform a self-diagnosis. Just because you show one or two general symptoms, that does not mean you have the condition. No single test can determine whether or not you have ADHD; a licensed health professional must gather various bits of information in order to make a correct diagnosis. Depending on the severity of the condition, a person may or may not need medication, but therapy and counseling should ALWAYS be considered.

ADHD, as well as other mental issues, affect millions of Americans and their families each year. These effects don’t have to take dominance over your life; take the Dr. Owens Mental Health Prescreen Assessment and check your mental status!
