The triangle of persons is a very important tool in the psychotherapeutic process. This tool is used in Interpersonal Therapy (ITP). This process of therapy is based on the basic idea that past relationships project into current relationships and is often also experienced in the transference relationship with the treating therapist. Transference is the term used to define the expectations and emotional responses the patient has of the therapist. It is often the case that the patient responds to the psychiatrist the same way they would their partner. However, helping a patient experience a corrective emotional experience has to be done by a professional.
