Divorce is a traumatizing phenomenon in itself, without it being on public display. Unfortunately for Deion Sanders and Pilar Sanders their nasty divorce has become a circus event. From the looks of it Deion is the ring leader of this fiasco. On Monday April 20th, 2012 Deion tweeted “Pray for me and my kids now! they just witnessed their mother and a friend jump me in my room. She is going to jail n I’m pressing charges.”
Pilar Sanders wants her side of the story to be told. She stated “There are always two sides to a story and the truth will come out in court”. Deion even tweeted pictures of his two sons filling out the police reports against their mother.
My main concern with this incident is the welfare of the children. Many times parents get so caught up in being vindictive and in the middle of a power struggle they forget the main people being hurt and traumatized are the children.
Here are the facts: About 50% of marriages end in divorce. On a better note, the number of first time married couples is only 30% ending in divorce. So you can imagine the number of patients I see who complain about life altering incidents, which stem from a divorce… “A Lot”
So here is a #TIP for you married couples who plan on getting a divorce:
- Don’t use your children as pawns like in a game of chess
- Don’t air your dirty laundry. Especially on Twitter
- In cases like this don’t get advice from your cousin “Pookie” seek professional help.
- Most divorces can be prevented with the proper intervention.
- Divorce is always an option not the only solution.
